Packing List for travel to developing countries or wilderness areas

Clothes (Find out if there are local customs or taboos regarding dress, some cultures have very strict rules for men and women's attire.)

  • Pants / shorts
  • Skirts
  • Shirts
  • One nice outfit for special occasion
  • Undergarments
  • Sandals that you can wear socks with
  • Socks
  • Good walking shoes
  • Shower shoes
  • Warm fleece or sweater
  • Lightweight rain poncho
  • Hat or visor with brim
  • Bandana
  • Sarong (even for the guys, a sarong is dead handy to have along, it is extremely versatile - use it as a sheet, towel, rucksack, skirt, dress, shawl, tarp, etc)
  • Sunglasses


Toiletries

  • Toothbrush with ventilated case
  • Toothpaste
  • Shampoo / soap (Consider Dr. Bronners)
  • Brush
  • Leave in conditioner or detangler if your hair is long and you are using Dr. Bronner's)
  • Hair ties / clips
  • Mouthwash (for disinfecting toothbrush)
  • Toilet paper (consider taking out cardboard tube so it squishes better)
  • Q tips

Personal Care

  • Sunscreen (for skin, face & lips)
  • Serious Insect Repellent (consider DEET if you are going to a Malaria, Dengue or Yellow fever zone)
  • Personal prescriptions (bring paper copy of Rx in case you need to replace) (consider putting in carry on luggage so it can't get lost)
  • Eye drops (Similasan)
  • Anti-itch cream (homeopathic, benadryl, halog)
  • Protective eye wear
  • Handi wipes
  • Hand sanitizer gel
  • Backpacking towel and washcloth
  • Laundry detergent (Dr. Bronners)

Water

  • Water filter (consider bringing an old sock and some coffee filters for pre-filter)
  • Micropure tablets to kill anything the filter might miss
  • Collapsable bucket to hold water
  • Solar / Camp shower
  • Small dropper bottle of bleach to sanitize bathing and laundry water
  • Nalgene bottle or similar
